Former Aston Villa captain Stiliyan Petrov has reportedly held talks with sixth-tier side Nuneaton Town.
The 37-year-old midfielder spent seven years with the Villans but was forced to retire in 2013 after being diagnosed with acute leukaemia.
Petrov successfully battled the disease and outlined his desire to return to football, linking back up with Villa during pre-season in a bid to prove his worth.
Villa boss Roberto Di Matteo decided not to offer him a new contract, however, and now National League North side Nuneaton have emerged as the favourites for his signature.
Petrov is expected to go straight into the side for the Boro's game with Curzon Ashton at Liberty Way on October 8.
