Prince Ali to stand for FIFA presidency

Prince Ali confirms that he will stand for the FIFA presidency in February's election.

Prince Ali has confirmed that he will stand for the FIFA presidency in the next election in February.

The 39-year-old Jordanian was defeated in May's election by Sepp Blatter, only for the Swiss to resign a few days later following allegations of widespread corruption within football's world governing body.

Ali will go up against UEFA president Michel Platini and honorary FIFA vice-president Chung Mong-joon for the right to succeed Blatter.

"I don't believe FIFA can give football back to the people of the world, without new leadership, untainted by the practices of the past," Ali wrote on Twitter.

"That is why I stand here in the timeless heart of Amman to once again launch my candidacy for the presidency of FIFA. I ask you to support me in my campaign to bring hope, dignity, excellence and opportunity back to football, the greatest sport on earth.

"I stand with people who love football as I do. People who know in their hearts the power of the sport to change lives for the better. My sole ambition is to make FIFA worthy of representing the greatest sport and the greatest fans on Earth. I am running for you."

The election will take place in Zurich on February 26, 2016.
