Alan Pardew: 'Newcastle United need British players'

Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew admits that the lack of British players at St James' Park is an issue he wants to address.

Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew has admitted that he is worried by the lack of British players at St James' Park this season.

The Magpies named just one Englishman in their last starting XI, with Mike Williamson the sole homegrown player to feature in a 2-1 win over Cardiff City.

Newcastle's last 12 Premier League goals have all been scored by Frenchman, with the likes of Hatem Ben Arfa, Loic Remy and Yohan Cabaye all brought to the North East in recent seasons.

Pardew has conceded that a recruitment drive aimed at securing talent from the continent needs balancing, an issue he wants to address in the next two transfer windows.

He told Sky Sports News: "One issue is that we're going to need to look at British players quickly, because we're starting to get filled up with perhaps too many foreign players.

"I think we need to strengthen the team and maybe in January as well. But we have to use the funds we have.

"We're not overloaded with funds and I think that gets lost a little bit."

During the interview with Sky's Goals on Sunday programme Pardew covered a variety of topics including Newcastle owner Mike Ashley, who he declared does not understand football logic.
