Head coach Eddie Howe says that Newcastle United tried and failed to make more signings on transfer deadline day.

Eddie Howe has revealed that Newcastle United made efforts to make further signings during transfer deadline day.

The Magpies have enjoyed a solid start to the new Premier League campaign, collecting seven points during a five-match period which has included fixtures with Manchester City and Liverpool.

However, despite their performance at Anfield in midweek, a number of minor injuries highlighted that the squad may require more depth, particularly in light of defender Emil Krafth being ruled out for nine months.

Newcastle were also in the market for a new central midfielder, and Howe has admitted that every effort was made on Thursday to try to bring in at least one more fresh faces.

Speaking to reporters at a press conference, Howe said: "We were trying right up until the end of the window. Sometimes things look like they're going to get done and for whatever reason they didn't.

"There's no blame attached to that. We were actively trying to do one or two things that would have made a difference but it didn't happen."

Despite acknowledging his disappointment at failing to make further additions, Howe has insisted that he remains delighted with the club's business in recent months.

Nick Pope, Sven Botman, Matt Targett and Alexander Isak have all been signed on permanent deals, and Howe feels that the club's hierarchy have overseen a successful transfer window.

The Englishman added: "Very good window for us, I think. We set out at the start of the window with a clear vision of what I wanted it to be. It's never going to be perfect. It's never absolutely as you want it to be but from the board down I think everyone has given their all to make things happen.

"I found the window to be very difficult this year. Pleased it is shut and we can focus on the football but very pleased with the squad."

Although the North East outfit failed to make any additions, as many as five players departed the club on a permanent or temporary basis.

Defender Federico Fernandez signed for Spanish side Elche, while goalkeeper Martin Dubravka was allowed to move to Manchester United on loan.

Kell Watts, Matty Longstaff and Lucas De Bolle also departed on loan to Peterborough United, Colchester United and Hamilton Academical respectively.
