Newcastle United's Jonas Gutierrez says that the club need to learn from their poor season in the Premier League.

Newcastle United's Jonas Gutierrez believes that it is imperative that he and his teammates "learn" from their disappointing campaign.

The Magpies finished the season, which was congested with Europa League fixtures, five points above the relegation zone in the Premier League.

"We have to learn from last season," Gutierrez told the club's official website. "We made mistakes and we can learn from those to ensure that we don't make them again next year.

"It was so important to stay up. When you start the season the first thing you think about is staying up and then you build and progress from there once that is achieved. Last year was quite a new one for the club because it had been a long time since we were in Europe, and we have to learn from that."

In the following campaign, Newcastle were close to challenging for a Champions League spot.
