Steve McClaren: 'Newcastle United considering emergency goalkeeper loan'

Newcastle United manager Steve McClaren admits that he is looking at options for an emergency loan after goalkeeper Rob Elliot picked up a thigh injury.

Steve McClaren has admitted that Newcastle United will have to consider bringing in a goalkeeper on an emergency loan after Rob Elliot picked up an injury.

The 29-year-old, who has been starting since first-choice stopper Tim Krul tore his ACL during the international break, suffered a recurrence of a thigh injury that forced him to miss time last season during the goalless draw with Stoke City.

When asked about the possibility of bringing in a keeper on loan, the manager told reporters: "We are certainly looking at the situation and seeing what we can do because that's three of our senior goalkeepers injured.

"We didn't think [Elliot] would play and he didn't feel right [yesterday] but he insisted on having a fitness test. We allowed that, he came through it and said 'play me'.

"There is a good chance [of missing the match against Bournemouth] because it if a recurrence of the one that he has had long-term, so we don't hold much hope. He just got through that."

Karl Darlow is still a couple of weeks away from a return to action after injuring his ankle last month, leaving 18-year-old Freddie Woodman as the only goalkeeper available for next week's match.
