New England Revolution stop the rot with New York City FC win

Lee Nguyen's goal on 12 minutes is enough for New England Revolution to beat New York City FC and end a five-match losing streak.

New England Revolution have edged out 10-man New York City at the Gillette Stadium to end their five-match losing streak in the MLS this morning.

Lee Nguyen struck the only goal of the game after 12 minutes as Jay Heaps's side picked up their first win since June 18 - a 2-0 victory over Chicago Fire.

Angelino came close early on as he found space to fire off a shot from distance, only to see his attempt fly inches wide of the Revolution goal.

The hosts came back strongly, though, and they soon took the lead in the 12th minute as Daigo Kobayashi and Diego Fagundez combined to play in Nguyen, who made no mistake with an adroit finish.

New York might have equalised just minutes later when David Villa produced a smart through-ball for Jason Hernandez, but he could only send an effort wide of the target from the six-yard box.

The Revolution almost went two ahead before the break thanks to Teal Bunbury, only for the forward to be denied expertly by Josh Saunders in the top-centre of goal.

Things went from bad to worse for City on 55 minutes when Ned Grabavoy was shown a straight red as the visitors' task of a comeback grew considerably steeper.

New England came within the width of the crossbar from doubling their lead on the 70-minute mark when Charlie Davies saw his fierce drive cannon off the bar, but they held on for the win.
