Bayern Munich have put themselves in a strong position after they defeated Marseille 2-0 in France in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final.

The hosts could have gone ahead in the opening 10 minutes, but Loic Remy could only hit the sidenetting after Rod Fanni had his header saved by Manuel Neuer.

Bayern proved wasteful with a lot of their first-half possession, but they took the lead a minute before the break when Mario Gomez fired in after a quick counter-attack.

Mathieu Valbuena put his header over the bar just after half time before Andre Ayew saw his header kept out by a smart save from Neuer.

Gomez had a chance to double his side's lead, but he could only hit his shot at Elinton Andrade. The home side nearly scored instantly, but Remy's drive was kept out by Neuer.

The win was sealed with 20 minutes to play when Arjen Robben wove past the Marseille defence before striking the ball home.
