Second-half strikes from debutants Alexander Buttner and Nick Powell give Manchester United a big win over Wigan Athletic at Old Trafford.

Second-half strikes from debutants Alexander Buttner and Nick Powell helped Manchester United record a comfortable win over Wigan Athletic at Old Trafford this afternoon.

The hosts could have taken the lead in the opening five minutes of the game, but Javier Hernandez was denied from the penalty spot by Ali Al-Habsi after the Latics keeper had been harshly judged to have fouled Danny Welbeck.

The breakthrough finally came in the 51st minute when Paul Scholes, who was making his 700th senior appearance for the Red Devils, tapped in from close range.

Hernandez doubled the lead 12 minutes later, smashing home from Buttner's low cross.

The Dutch left-back then added his name to the scoresheet with a fine solo goal.

Powell completed the scoring with a driven shot from outside the area eight minutes from time.
