Louis van Gaal: "I don't know why our fans shout 'attack'"

Louis van Gaal questions the chants of "attack" that could be heard at Old Trafford during his side's 0-0 draw with West Ham United on Saturday.

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has insisted that his side play attacking football despite failing to score for the fifth time in 15 Premier League matches this season.

United were held to a sixth goalless draw of the campaign in all competitions by West Ham United at Old Trafford on Saturday, despite the home side having numerous attempts on goal.

Van Gaal has dismissed claims that his side do not show enough offensive intent on the pitch and questioned why fans at Old Trafford have taken to shouting "attack" at his players.

"I am pleased with the performance but when you create that many chances you have to score," said the Dutchman.

Michael SteeleLacklustre: A frustrated Van Gaal trudges away
Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal was left confused at fans chanting for his side to attack more during their draw with West Ham.

The Red Devils drew for the third game in succession as they failed to find a way past the injury-hit Hammers, who also had a host of chances themselves.

They have now played in six goalless encounters this term with fans showing their frustrations throughout.

And Van Gaal accepts they need to do more with the decent opportunities they get during the game after having a staggering 21 shots on goal and hitting the target just once.

"I am pleased with the performance but when you create that many chances you have to score," the Dutchman told reporters. "Scoring is not only about composure but also a lot of luck, in my opinion. I am not so worried but we need to get over this period.

"My players created a lot more chances than in recent matches but we did not do the most important aspect of football.

"I do not understand why [the fans] are shouting attack, attack, attack because we are the attacking team and not West Ham United."

The Red Devils next face a trip to Wolfsburg in their final Champions League group stage match on Tuesday night.
