Gary Neville: 'David de Gea is a match-winner'

Gary Neville says that David de Gea is a "match-winning goalkeeper" after his return to the Manchester United starting XI.

Gary Neville has insisted that David de Gea will prove himself to be a 'match-winner' for Manchester United over the course of the season.

De Gea seemed to be on the verge of a summer move to Real Madrid, but talks collapsed on transfer deadline day, meaning that the 24-year-old will remain with Louis van Gaal's side until at least January.

The Spanish stopper made his first club appearance of the season in Manchester United's 3-1 victory over Liverpool and Neville told Sky Sports News that De Gea is likely to win his side a number of points during the 2015-16 campaign.

"He's a match-winning goalkeeper, and Manchester United have had too many experiences – good and bad over the years – around goalkeepers," Neville said.

"When they had Peter Schmeichel and Edwin van der Sar, it's looked rock solid. De Gea in the last couple of years has been fantastic.

"In between, it hasn't been so. There's been a lot of chopping and changing, and you just felt as though it was moving towards that type of moment with [Sergio] Romero, [Victor] Valdes, [Anders] Lindegaard – that type of moment where you think 'who's going to be in the net'."

Since his collapsed move to the Spanish capital, De Gea has signed a new four-year-deal with his current side.
