Team News: David de Gea returns for Manchester United, Wayne Rooney misses out

David de Gea is handed his first start of the season as Manchester United welcome Liverpool to Old Trafford.

David de Gea will make his first appearance of the season for Manchester United in today's Premier League meeting with Liverpool.

The Spaniard had been strongly linked with a switch to Real Madrid all summer, meaning that Sergio Romero was trusted between the sticks.

With the transfer window now over, and De Gea still a United player, Louis van Gaal has opted to throw his trusted stopper back into the mix for this evening's crunch clash.

There is some bad news for home supporters, however, as the recent injury picked up by Wayne Rooney has kept him out of the matchday squad.

That has led to Van Gaal starting without a recognised striker, instead opting to field Marouane Fellaini up top, with recent purchase Anthony Martial having to make do with a place among the subs.

Liverpool have made just the one change from their disappointing 3-0 defeat to West Ham United last time out.

Danny Ings comes in for his first start, replacing the suspended Philippe Coutinho for what is likely to be a feisty derby affair at the Theatre of Dreams.

Liverpool head to the home of their rivals on the back of a run that has seen them avoid defeat on just one of their last eight visits.

Manchester United: De Gea; Darmian, Smalling, Blind, Shaw; Carrick, Schweinsteiger; Mata, Herrera, Memphis; Fellaini
Subs: Romero, McNair, Rojo, Schneiderlin, Valencia, Young, Martial

Liverpool: Mignolet; Clyne, Skrtel, Lovren, Gomez; Lucas, Can, Milner, Firmino; Ings, Benteke
Subs: Bogdan, Toure, Sakho, Moreno, Origi, Rossiter, Ibe
