Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho warns that Victor Lindelof will need time to adapt to English football, but is pleased with the defender's progress so far.

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has said that he is "happy" with the progress of Victor Lindelof, but warned that the centre-back will need time to adapt to life at the club.

Lindelof became Mourinho's first signing of the summer when he completed his move from Benfica, and he has since featured in all five of United's pre-season friendlies.

The Swede believes that he is settling in well at the club, but Mourinho is wary of expecting too much too soon from the 23-year-old.

"Step by step. Benfica is a giant club, I always think that players coming from Benfica come mentally ready because it is a big club and the responsibility to play for them makes players ready. But the Portuguese league is different and has different qualities," he told reporters.

"Benfica is one of the dominant teams, so he's more used to playing with the ball than without the ball, so he needs his time and we are going to give him his time to develop. Such a young player needs time.

"Manchester United is a huge club with huge responsibility; the Premier League is the same. So let's give him time, but we're happy with what he is doing, step by step."

United will take on Sampdoria in their final pre-season friendly on Wednesday before facing Real Madrid in the European Super Cup.
