Mourinho: 'Club record would mean nothing'

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho insists that he is not concerned about the opportunity to set a new club record when Newcastle United visit Old Trafford on Saturday.

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has insisted that he is not bothered whether his side manage to set a new club record or not when they welcome Newcastle United to Old Trafford on Saturday evening.

The Red Devils have now gone 37 games unbeaten at home in all competitions, equalling a record previously set by Sir Alex Ferguson between December 1998 and April 2000.

Should United avoid losing to the Magpies they will set a new record, but Mourinho is adamant that the feat would mean "absolutely nothing" as they fight for the bigger prize of the Premier League title.

"We don't play for records and, if we concede a goal but we score at least two, I'm happy," he told reporters today.

"We defend as a team, we try to defend as a team and our numbers show exactly that collective effort, but the objective is to win matches at home, the objective is not to not concede goals. Of course, if you don't concede, you're closer to winning matches, but that's not an obsession for us.

"The record means absolutely nothing for us. We lost the last match - we need points, I know the way Newcastle plays and the way Benitez prepares his teams, so we need to get back the points we need."

United enter the game eight points adrift of leaders Manchester City in the Premier League table.
