Louis van Gaal: 'Wayne Rooney unhappy in forward role'

Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal claims that Wayne Rooney was 'unhappy' at centre-forward during Saturday's Premier League clash against Norwich City.

Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal has claimed that Wayne Rooney was 'unhappy' with his forward role against Norwich City on Saturday afternoon.

Rooney was due to play in a midfield position against the Canaries, but Anthony Martial's injury in the warm-up forced Van Gaal into a reshuffle, with Ander Herrera starting in midfield and Rooney moving further forward.

Van Gaal has hinted that he wanted to select Adnan Januzaj up front, but the Belgian's involvement for the club's Under-21 team on Friday night took that option away.

"I don't think he was very happy with me that I decided to put him in the striker's position," Van Gaal told reporters. "But Januzaj had played 45 minutes yesterday so I couldn't put him in the starting lineup today. But Rooney did very well to assist Juan Mata. He would have played No.10."

Juan Mata scored the winner at Carrow Road as Man United moved to within one point of the top four in the Premier League table.
