Newcastle United midfielder Jonas Gutierrez says that he hopes that Robin van Persie did not elbow Yohan Cabaye with "bad intentions".

Newcastle United winger Jonas Gutierrez has claimed that he hopes Manchester United striker Robin van Persie did not elbow Yohan Cabaye with "bad intentions".

The Netherlands international, who had a heated exchange with his fellow countryman Tim Krul while playing for Arsenal last season, was alleged to have elbowed midfielder Cabaye in the face during yesterday's 3-0 win over the Magpies.

"I didn't see it, but I hope he didn't do it with bad intentions," Gutierrez told the Shields Gazette.

"We knew what happened last year with him. It wasn't a good way to celebrate. But that's passed, and I hope he didn't do it with bad intentions."

Referee Howard Webb did not take any action against Van Persie during play.
