Sam Allardyce: 'Anthony Martial has not delivered for Manchester United'

Former Everton boss Sam Allardyce says that he is "surprised" by the news that Anthony Martial has reportedly been offered a new contract by Manchester United.

Sam Allardyce has suggested that Anthony Martial is not worthy of a new Manchester United contract as he has failed to 'consistently deliver' for the club.

The Red Devils are rumoured to have offered the French attacker a five-year deal, despite being granted the chance to leave the club by Jose Mourinho during the summer.

Martial has been used for a combined 60 minutes in the Premier League this term and also struggled for momentum during the 2017-18 campaign, leaving Allardyce perplexed as to why he is supposedly being retained for the long term.

"I'm very surprised if they have offered him a five-year contract in all honesty," he told talkSPORT. "The lad is in his fourth season at Manchester United and I don't think anybody would actually say he has delivered consistently.

"We've seen the odd flash of his brilliance, but by now he should be showing that brilliance on a more regular basis. He should be hitting top form more often than not.

"He's had two managers now and both managers have found it difficult to find him a regular place in the Man United side."

Martial was made the most expensive teenager at the time when joining United from Monaco in a £36m deal three years ago.
