Manchester United vs. Liverpool past FA Cup meetings

Ahead of Sunday's FA Cup clash between Manchester United and Liverpool, Sports Mole looks at the previous meetings between the two sides in the competition.

Old Trafford will play host to a colossal FA Cup fixture on Sunday afternoon, with Manchester United welcoming bitter rivals Liverpool in the quarter-finals of the competition.

The FA Cup represents Man United's only realistic chance of securing silverware this season, but Liverpool have already won the EFL Cup in 2023-24 and are also searching for success in the Premier League and Europa League.

Man United will enter the contest off the back of a 2-0 win over Everton in the league last weekend, while Liverpool were in action on Thursday evening, beating Sparta Prague 6-1 in the second leg of their Europa League last-16 clash to breeze into the final eight.

Here, Sports Mole takes a look at the past FA Cup meetings between the two sides ahead of the much-anticipated contest in Manchester this weekend.

Head-to-head FA Cup record

Previous meetings: 18
Man Utd wins: 10
Draws: 4
Liverpool wins: 4

These two teams have locked horns on 18 occasions in the FA Cup, and Man United comfortably lead the head-to-head record, recording 10 wins to Liverpool's four, while there have also been four draws.

The most recent meeting between the two teams in the historic competition came in the fourth round of the 2020-21 tournament, with Man United running out 3-2 winners at Old Trafford.

Liverpool's last FA Cup success over the Red Devils was a 2-1 victory in the fourth round of the 2011-12 tournament, while they also met in the third round in 2010-11, which Man United won 1-0 at Old Trafford, and fifth round in 2005-06, with Liverpool triumphing 1-0 at Anfield.

The two sides have twice locked horns in the final of the FA Cup, most recently in May 1996, when Eric Cantona famously scored the only goal of the match to hand Man United a 1-0 success at Wembley.

The pair first met in the final of the competition in 1977, and Man United also triumphed on that occasion, recording a 2-1 victory, with Stuart Pearson and Jimmy Greenhoff on the scoresheet for the Red Devils either side of an effort from Liverpool's Jimmy Case.

Their first two FA Cup meetings took place in 1898, with the pair playing out a goalless draw in the second round of the competition on February 12, before Liverpool won 2-1 in the replay four days later.

Man United's first-ever FA Cup success over Liverpool proved to be in February 1903, with the Red Devils running out 2-1 winners over their rivals to advance to the second round.
