Manchester United slump to CFR Cluj defeat

Manchester United end their Champions League group campaign with a 1-0 defeat at home to CFR Cluj.

Manchester United have ended their Champions League group campaign with a 1-0 defeat at home to CFR Cluj.

While the Red Devils had already qualified for the next round before the match at Old Trafford, the result has seen Cluj enter the Europa League.

Chris Smalling had the home side's best chance of the first half, but he somehow headed wide from all of six yards.

Cluj showed plenty of attacking intent against a much-changed United team and they took the lead with 56 minutes on the clock when Luis Alberto fired a spectacular effort into the top corner from 25 yards.

Paul Scholes had a sight of goal in the 70th minute as the hosts tried to get themselves back into the contest, though he could only flash his effort wide.

United continued to heap pressure on the Cluj goal in the final stages, but they were unable to find an equaliser.
