Former Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel insists that Jose Mourinho is not the right man to succeed Sir Alex Ferguson when he eventually finishes his long reign at Old Trafford.

Ex-Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel has declared that Jose Mourinho will never become manager at Old Trafford because he is too controversial.

Mourinho has long been touted as a possible successor to Sir Alex Ferguson but Schmeichel believes that the Portuguese coach does not have the staying power to take the reins at United.

He told The Sun: "He will not be the successor. I don't think the club would be happy with everything Mourinho brings with him.

"He's a great candidate for his qualities as a manager but the club doesn't want all the things that come with him.

"Chelsea, Inter Milan and now Real Madrid, he doesn't last more than three years."

The Danish keeper has also predicted that United will edge Madrid when the two sides clash in the Champions League last 16, beginning with the first leg at the Bernabeu tomorrow night.
