Tim Howard's heroics frustrate Manchester City

Tim Howard pulls off a number of second-half saves to earn Everton a 0-0 draw from their trip to Manchester City.

A Tim Howard-inspired Everton survived a second-half onslaught to claim a 0-0 draw from their trip to Manchester City this evening.

The veteran American stopper has received a host of criticism for his performances between the posts this term, but he produced a string of saves on this occasion to deny City, who boast the best home record in the Premier League.

During a first half in which neither keeper was particularly overworked, it was the visitors from Merseysiders that carved out the better of the openings.

They came closest to breaking the deadlock in the 30th minute when Leon Osman's left-footed volley left Joe Hart - making his 250th Premier League appearance for City - rooted to the spot. Yet, just when a goal looked inevitable, the veteran midfielder's effort skimmed the outside of the post and went wide.

Prior to that, Hart was required to thwart Gerard Deulofeu from a narrowing angle, while up the other end Howard was called into action to turn away Yaya Toure's downward header from Bacary Sagna's cross.

It was a relatively lacklustre showing from the hosting Citizens during the opening 45 minutes, but there was much more attacking intent about them after the restart.

First to test Howard in the 61st minute was Aguero, who had not scored at the Etihad Stadium since November 21. His wait was extended as the Everton custodian parried clear his powerful drive from 12 yards out.

Moments later Howard then stuck out a boot to deny Raheem Sterling's low strike and then it was Aguero again that found his route to goal blocked by the 36-year-old.

Next to try his luck 13 minutes from time was Jesus Navas as he rose to meet Gael Clichy's lofted pass, yet despite being unmarked, the Spanish winger was unable to keep his header down.

That was to be City's last meaningful effort as the travelling Toffees negotiated their way through the minutes that remained unharmed to secure a share of the spoils.
