Joey Barton has attempted to calm the furore surrounding Luis Suarez by claiming that his recent alleged biting incident is "not the end of the world".
The Liverpool striker is under investigation by FIFA after he appeared to bite the shoulder of Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini during Uruguay's 1-0 win at the World Cup in Brazil on Tuesday.
Figures within the world of football have called on FIFA to impose a heavy sanction on the striker, and while Barton believes that Suarez should be punished, he believes that his ability as a footballer should not be forgotten.
Barton tweeted: "I love Suarez. I love his passion for the game. I would have him on my team everyday of the week. I am also aware you can't defend him here.
"All things considered I'd rather receive a bite than a leg breaking challenge. Whilst he should be punished, it is not the end of the world.
"He's a winner. If that means he occasionally steps over the line between right and wrong, than thats what comes with the territory. Nobody's perfect..."
Reports have claimed that Suarez could face a two-year ban if found guilty.
