James Milner talks up importance of clean sheets

James Milner admits that Liverpool have to maintain their impressive defensive start to the season throughout if they are to keep pace with Manchester City.

Liverpool vice-captain James Milner has stressed the importance of keeping clean sheets if his side are to end their long wait for Premier League title success.

The Reds have shut out West Ham United and Crystal Palace in their first two outings, seeing them keep pace with champions Manchester City at the top of the table.

No other top-flight side can hold claim to a perfect defensive record, and Milner acknowledges that remaining tight at the back is key to making up the 25-point gap on City from last season.

"That's something we have to work on - winning all different types of games," he told the club's official website following the 2-0 win over Palace.

"We know with the players that we have got going forward if we keep those clean sheets then we've got every chance of nicking a goal at the other end.

"So it comes from the keeper and all the way through the back four and all the way through the team and the way we play, everyone defends together."

Milner extended his record for the most Premier League games scored in without losing any of them (48) by netting from the penalty spot at Selhurst Park on Monday night.
