Joel Matip returns to Liverpool training ahead of Manchester United clash

Liverpool defender Joel Matip returns to training, handing manager Jurgen Klopp a major boost heading into this weekend's Premier League clash with Manchester United.

Liverpool have been handed an injury boost ahead of their Premier League clash with Manchester United on Sunday as defender Joel Matip is back in training.

The 29-year-old has missed Liverpool's last three games against Newcastle United and Southampton in the league as well as the FA Cup victory over Aston Villa.

Senior centre-backs Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez both remain sidelined with long-term knee injuries, while Matip himself has suffered with several injury problems throughout the campaign.

However, the return of Matip has provided a boost for Jurgen Klopp's side, who have been hampered by defensive injuries all season, as they look to stop United going six points clear at the top of the table on Sunday.

If Matip is fit to play against United then he will likely line up alongside Fabinho at centre-back, although Klopp may still opt to start with Rhys Williams, Nat Phillips or Jordan Henderson in that position.

Liverpool, who are without a win in their last three league games, would move level on points with United if they were to pick up three points this weekend.
