Brendan Rodgers: 'Jordan Henderson can replace Steven Gerrard as captain'

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers is adamant that Jordan Henderson can replace Steven Gerrard as captain of the club when the 34-year-old leaves in the summer.

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has insisted that Jordan Henderson can replace Steven Gerrard and become captain of the Merseysiders.

The 24-year-old was named vice-captain by Rodgers earlier this season, and is the frontrunner to be named as Gerrard's replacement as skipper when the legendary midfielder leaves Anfield in July.

England international Henderson continued his good run of form with a solid performance in his side's 1-0 win over Sunderland, while he also took the armband after Gerrard left the game at half time.

"I've made him a vice-captain of the club and he has really grown, not just as a footballer but as a young lad," Rodgers told reporters.

"You saw his quality today, his leadership and his power. He is a fantastic young man and that was the reason for giving him it.

"When Steven isn't on the field, he is a real leader for us and there is no question he can go on and become captain at the club."

Liverpool moved up to eighth in the Premier League courtesy of their win at the Stadium of Light.
