Gerard Houllier hails "true leader" Jamie Carragher

Gerard Houllier says that Jamie Carragher always gives 100% for Liverpool.

Former Liverpool manager Gerard Houllier has paid tribute to Jamie Carragher ahead of his final game for the club this Sunday.

The Reds travel to Anfield to take on Queens Park Rangers at the weekend in what is the 35-year-old's final outing for the club before he retires in the summer to become a TV pundit.

Houllier, who managed Carragher during his reign at the club from 1998 to 2004, says that the centre-back always gave him full commitment.

"He started playing at left-back for me. He improved a lot. I always told him that big centre-backs usually start playing in the left or right-back position," Houllier told the club's official website.

"It probably gave him a good reading of the game and he could use the ball. He started playing at Liverpool as a defensive midfield player but wherever you played him you got 100%, even more. He was a true leader.

"He never gives up and whatever the score was he was always there and probably allowed us to make some comebacks in a game."

Carragher made his debut for the club in January 1997.
