Brendan Rodgers: 'Liverpool can still qualify'

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers says that his team can still qualify to the last-16 stage of the Champions League after a 1-0 reverse away to Real Madrid.

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has claimed that his side are still more than capable of qualifying to the knockout stages of the Champions League after their 1-0 defeat to Real Madrid on Tuesday.

The European champions edged out the visitors at Santiago Bernabeu thanks to Karim Benzema's goal and Rodgers's side now need six points from a trip to Ludogorets and a home tie with Basel to stand a chance of qualification.

He told ITV Sport: "There is every chance we can still qualify. We've looked at it and we know we need to win in Ludoogrets, and then it's a last game at home to Basel, so at least it's in our hands."

Rodgers dropped the likes of Steven Gerrard, Mario Balotelli and Raheem Sterling to the substitutes' bench for the trip to the Spanish capital, and the Northern Irishman declared himself proud of his makeshift team.

"We're disappointed with the result because we've lost but the performance was much better," he added. "Real Madrid are winning threes and fours in each game and we came and showed our quality.

"I'm very proud of the team and our support was incredible. We showed some wonderful composure in a great arena."
