Boyd opened his account for the Tigers with little more than a minute on the clock, turning in Robbie Brady's cross from 12 yards out.

Lee Clark's side could have drawn level six minutes later when Nikola Zigic tested David Stockdale with a close-range header, but they fell further behind in the 11th minute.

Gedo beat Jack Butland with a low effort from 12 yards out after latching onto David Meyler's pass to double the home side's advantage.

Boyd's second of the afternoon put Hull well in the driving seat. The striker guided Ahmed Elmohamady's pass into the net in the 33rd minute to make it 3-0 at the break.

Robert Koren piled more misery on Birmingham early in the second period, finding the bottom corner from just outside the area after being lined up by Brady.

It was a dominant display from the home side, and they completed the rout in the 76th minute when Gedo headed in Elmohamady's cross to claim his second goal of the afternoon.

Peter Lovenkrands and Christopher Burke found the net for Birmingham in the last 10 minutes, but both goals were little more than consolation.
