Bastian Schweinsteiger wary of "tremendous" Karim Benzema

Bastian Schweinsteiger warns Germany that progression to the semi-final stage of the World Cup could hinge on combating France striker Karim Benzema.

Bastian Schweinsteiger has warned Germany's defence that they must be "alert" to combat the threat of Karim Benzema in this evening's World Cup clash with France.

Both nations will contest the first quarter-final encounter of the tournament today, with the winner earning the right to face either Brazil or Colombia in the last-four stage.

The Real Madrid hitman has struck three goals in the competition thus far, and Schweinsteiger says that progression could hinge on Germany's management of the "tremendous" striker.

Victory within regulation time proved something of an anomaly throughout the second-round ties, with Les Bleus one of only three sides to seal their progression in the 90 minutes.

"[France] have a strong side and more importantly, they are playing very well," he told The Times of India.

"In the round of 16, where almost every match went to extra-time, only Colombia, Netherlands, and France won their matches within 90 minutes.

"We have to be alert since they are playing free-flowing football with Karim Benzema in tremendous form."

This evening's encounter kicks off at 5pm.
