Roberto Martinez relishing "unique" Merseyside derby

Everton boss Roberto Martinez claims that the Merseyside derby can equal any matchup in world football for pride and passion.

Everton manager Roberto Martinez believes that the Merseyside derby has no equal in world football, chomping at the bit to take part in the "glamorous" fixture for the first time this weekend.

Martinez will lead the Toffees into battle against Liverpool on Saturday afternoon aiming to maintain an unbeaten home record at Goodison Park, with just three points separating the local rivals in the Premier League table.

The Spaniard believes that a "unique" mix of pride and passion makes this weekend's showpiece fixture stand out, admitting that it would be a huge fillip for Everton's season to emerge victorious.

He told The Mirror: "It is a massive game. First and foremost it's a glamorous fixture. It's one of those that is followed worldwide.

"The significance, passion and history is reflected in the game. I know the Merseyside derby is quite unique and special. I don't think it can be compared to any other in world football.

"I have experienced derbies, the South Wales derby would be one that is full of passion. There have been many local clashes where you could see passion, but I don't think they will be anywhere near what is going to happen on Saturday."

Liverpool shared a 2-2 draw with their nearest neighbours in the corresponding fixture last season, which marked the Merseyside derby bow of current Reds boss Brendan Rodgers.
