Everton boss Roberto Martinez not relying on rivals in European quest

Everton manager Roberto Martinez insists that he is not relying on his rivals to drop points during the club's quest for European qualification.

Everton manager Roberto Martinez has insisted that he is not relying on his rivals to help the Toffees secure a European place.

The Merseyside outfit are currently fifth in the Premier League table, six points adrift of Arsenal, who occupy the final Champions League spot.

Should the Gunners lose to title chasers Manchester City on Saturday and the Toffees defeat Fulham on Sunday, Martinez's side will be just three points behind Arsenal.

"You'll get dizzy if you start looking at what the others can do," Martinez told reporters. "It is easier than that. You look at the points you can get and if it is big enough you can look at trying to achieve top four and finishing the season with European qualification.

"There are many twists and turns, the league this season has shown anyone can beat anyone or drop points where they are not expected to.

"It is not that I am not wishing one result or another, I am quite open-minded in that respect. It doesn't matter what the others will do in terms of having a successful season, it will be down to how many points we can get."

Everton also have a game in hand on their North London rivals.
