Roberto Martinez reveals that England defender Phil Jagielka will remain the captain of Everton.

New Everton manager Roberto Martinez has confirmed that Phil Jagielka will remain the team's captain next season.

The England international took over the responsibility on a permanent basis from Phil Neville last season.

However, following the departure of David Moyes to Manchester United, the position of skipper was made uncertain. Speaking at his press conference this afternoon though, Martinez insisted that Jagielka is "an important leader".

"Phil Jagielka will be a special captain and an important leader for the side," said the Spaniard.

Jagielka joined the Toffees from Sheffield United in 2007.
