Everton goalkeeper Tim Howard taking year-long break from international fooball

Everton goalkeeper Tim Howard is to take a year-long break from international duty with the US.

Everton goalkeeper Tim Howard has announced that he is taking a year-long break from international football to spend time with his family.

The former Manchester United stopper will not play for the USA until September next year following talks with national team coach Jurgen Klinsmann.

"I am grateful for the willingness of both [US coach] Jurgen Klinsmann and Everton manager Roberto Martinez to afford me the opportunity to spend time with my kids," said Howard in a statement.

"It's the right decision at the right time. Jurgen has always been up front with all the players in saying you have to earn your place, which is something I agree with, so I look forward to coming back next fall and competing for a spot."

The 34-year-old, who earned plaudits for his performances during the World Cup, has been capped 104 times by his country.
