Roy Hodgson rejects claims of rift in England camp

England manager Roy Hodgson plays down talk of tension in the England camp between skipper Wayne Rooney and Jamie Vardy.

Roy Hodgson has denied suggestions that England teammates Wayne Rooney and Jamie Vardy have had a falling-out ahead of the Euro 2016 meeting with Iceland.

It had been reported that the Three Lions skipper told Vardy and wife Rebekah to keep a low profile in the days leading up to the clash, having made headlines earlier in the tournament.

Rebekah was allegedly tear gassed prior to England's group-stage meeting with Russia at the height of disturbances in Marseille a fortnight ago.

Despite reports to the contrary, however, Hodgson insists that there are no problems in the England camp - particularly when it comes to Vardy and Rooney.

"I do not have a clue what you are referring to," he told reporters when asked about any tension. "There are absolutely no problems in footballing terms between Wayne Rooney and Jamie Vardy - in fact it's quite the opposite.

"They are very close friends on and off the field and I have no idea what you're referring too. I would advise Wayne not to answer. It's obviously one salacious story that someone has managed to spin and it is of no interest to us."

Hodgson was also forced to defend his decision to change half of his team for the goalless draw with Slovakia last week.
