Former Manchester City striker Paul Dickov takes over as manager of League One winners Doncaster Rovers.

League One champions Doncaster Rovers have confirmed that Paul Dickov has agreed to become their new manager with immediate effect.

Rovers gained promotion to the Championship last season under the guidance of interim manager Brian Flynn, who opted to step down from the position earlier this month to take up a senior role at the club.

That left the board to search for a new boss, with Michael Appleton said to be a leading contender.

However, "after extensive talks and interviews with various high quality applicants", it has been decided that 40-year-old Dickov is the right man to take the club forward.

"An 18-point criteria was set to identify the best possible candidate for the role. These criteria covered a whole range of aspects of the club in addition to the football. After completing the interview process, the board were in agreement that Paul was the best person to put their plans into action," read a statement on the club's official website.

The former Scotland international has been out of work since he resigned as manager of Oldham Athletic in February.
