James Coppinger reveals "hero's welcome"

James Coppinger reflects on the reception that the Doncaster Rovers players received from their supporters following their promotion back to the Championship.

Doncaster Rovers attacker James Coppinger has revealed that the players were treated to a "hero's welcome" by their supporters last night.

Rovers were promoted to the Championship yesterday afternoon in dramatic circumstances. Just seconds after Marcello Trotta had smashed a stoppage-time penalty that would have sent Brentford up against the crossbar, visiting Donny broke and Coppinger rolled in the only goal of the game to seal promotion.

"For Marcello Trotta to miss, and then I realised Billy Painter was by himself, I got on my bike and caught up with him so I could tap the ball in," he told BBC Radio Five Live.

"We went back to Doncaster last night, and to share it with the fans, it was a hero's welcome. It was fantastic for them, you could not write that kind of finish."

Coppinger, 32, joined Doncaster back in 2004 from Exeter City.
