Sampdoria are reportedly presented with the opportunity to sign Chelsea midfielder Danny Drinkwater on a free transfer.

Chelsea midfielder Danny Drinkwater is reportedly open to signing for Sampdoria during the summer transfer window.

Despite costing £30m just three years ago, there is an acceptance at Stamford Bridge that the Englishman may have to leave on a free transfer in order to free up space on the club's wage bill.

After failed loan spells at Burnley and Aston Villa respectively, the 30-year-old could struggle to gain interest in the Premier League.

According to Il Secolo XIX, that has resulted in an intermediary trying to gauge interest abroad, an approach which has included contact being made with Sampdoria.

The Serie A outfit are managed by Claudio Ranieri, who worked with Drinkwater when Leicester City won the Premier League title in 2016.

Sampdoria only finished in 15th position in Italy's top flight last season, putting Ranieri under pressure to deliver an improved campaign.
