Bournemouth defender Steve Cook talks up the importance of his side's 1-0 win over Newcastle United at St James' Park.

Bournemouth defender Steve Cook has talked up the importance of his side's 1-0 victory over Newcastle United at St James' Park this afternoon.

The 26-year-old scored the only goal of the game in the second minute of stoppage time to fire the Cherries to just their third win of the season, lifting them out of the relegation zone in the process.

Cook acknowledged that his side were hanging on in the first half, but heaped praise on their defensive performance for keeping them in the match.

"We don't score enough goals from set plays and what a time to get it. It's a vital three points," he told reporters.

"First half Newcastle were brilliant, Asmir Begovic kept us in the game but we showed spirit. We were dogged and outstanding defensively."

Bournemouth now sit 16th in the table, with two points separating them from the relegation zone.
