Preview: Borussia Monchengladbach vs. Heidenheim - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Tuesday's DFB-Pokal clash between Borussia Monchengladbach and Heidenheim, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

For the second time in quick succession, Borussia Monchengladbach and Heidenheim will lock horns, with a spot in the third round of the DFB-Pokal on offer for both sides on Tuesday night.

Monchengladbach recorded a 2-1 victory when the two teams met in the Bundesliga at Borussia-Park on Saturday, and the fixture will now be repeated in the German Cup.

Monchengladbach only just came out on top in Saturday's Bundesliga fixture, with an own goal from Jonas Fohrenbach in the early stages of the second period proving to be the difference between the two sides.

Die Fohlen have won two, drawn three and lost four of their nine league matches this season to collect nine points, which has left them in 11th position in the Bundesliga table.

Gerardo Seoane's side were excellent in the last round of this season's DFB-Pokal, recording a 7-0 victory over Bersenbruck, and this is a competition that they have won on three separate occasions, with their last success coming in 1994-95.

Monchengladbach finished 10th in the Bundesliga last season, and their main focus this term will be on improving in the league, but they are capable of making a big impression in the German Cup.

The Foals have won two and lost two of their last four matches in this competition, while they have won two, drawn one and lost one of their four games ahead of this contest.

Heidenheim have lost their last three games in the Bundesliga, including Saturday's reverse to Monchengladbach, with a total of seven points from nine matches leaving them 13th in the table.

Frank Schmidt's side won last season's 2. Bundesliga in order to secure promotion to Germany's top flight for the first time in their history, so it would be a huge achievement if they avoided relegated this term.

Heidenheim were excellent in the last round of the DFB-Pokal, beating Rostocker FC 8-0 to progress, and they have been victorious in two of their last three games in the competition.

The team last triumphed at the end of September, beating struggling Union Berlin 1-0, and their Bundesliga form will certainly take priority over the German Cup this season, so it would not be a surprise to see them eliminated from the competition on Tuesday night.

Heidenheim will return to Bundesliga action next Sunday against high-flying Stuttgart before the small matter of a clash with the champions Bayern Munich on November 11.

Monchengladbach have a lengthy injury list at this moment in time, with Jordan Siebatcheu, Marvin Friedrich, Ko Itakura, Tobias Sippel, Hannes Wolf, Tony Jantschke, Jonas Omlin and Yvandro Borges Sanches all out.

Meanwhile, Stefan Lainer is still unavailable, with the defender currently battling cancer.

Head coach Seoane will make changes from the side that started against Heidenheim in the league on Saturday, with Jan Jakob Olschowsky set to get the nod between the sticks, while Tomas Cvancara is expected to be introduced in the final third.

As for Heidenheim, Thomas Keller and Elidon Qenaj will be unavailable for selection due to knee injuries.

Head coach Schmidt will also make changes to the side that started in the Bundesliga on Saturday, with Marion-Thomas Busch, Florian Pick and Denis Thomalla set to come into the XI.

However, there is again expected to be a spot in the side for Eren Dinkci, who has scored five league goals this season during a strong start.

Borussia Monchengladbach possible starting lineup:
Olschowsky; Scally, Elvedi, Wober, Netz; Chiarodia, Weigel; Herrmann, Kramer, Hack; Cvancara

Heidenheim possible starting lineup:

We say: Borussia Monchengladbach 2-0 Heidenheim

Both managers will shuffle their packs for this contest, but we are expecting Monchengladbach's extra quality to allow them to advance to the next round. Heidenheim can be pleased with their start to the campaign, but their journey in the German Cup is likely to end on Tuesday night.
