Barcelona have put an end to speculation about the extent of Lionel Messi's injury, confirming that the player has suffered a bruised left knee.
The Argentine international was stretchered off during his side's 0-0 draw with Benfica in the Champions League, but is unlikely to face a significant layoff.
Messi is a doubt for this Sunday's La Liga showdown with Real Betis, but tests carried out on his knee have ruled out any serious problems.
"Tests carried out tonight have confirmed that the player has a bruising of the bone on the outside of the left knee," Barcelona said in a statement.
"The rate of his recovery will determine whether he will be available for the next game, on Sunday against Real Betis."
The draw with Benfica was enough to see Barcelona into the knockout phase of the competition as group winners and consign the Portuguese side to the Europa League.
