Barcelona were dominating the possession and Neymar was next to have an attempt, but his long-range effort failed to test Christian Abbiati in the Milan goal.
Midway through the half Neymar delivered a dangerous ball across the box that Alexis Sanchez was inches away from connecting with.
On the half-hour mark, Barcelona were awarded a penalty after Ignazio Abate dragged down Neymar inside the box, with Lionel Messi stepping up to fire his spot kick down the middle.
Riccardo Montolivo went close to equalising for the visitors when his well-struck effort beat Victor Valdes but went wide.
The hosts doubled their lead in the 39th minute through Sergio Busquets, who headed home a free kick from Xavi.

Milan pulled a goal back on the stroke of half time when Gerard Pique inadvertently diverted a cross from Kaka into his own net.
Andres Iniesta nearly scored the home side's third goal minutes into the second half, but Abbiati was at full stretch to keep out his low effort.
The hosts continued to dominate the proceedings and Neymar came close to scoring a fine solo goal after taking on four Milan players, however with just Abbiati to beat, he fired his strike over the bar.
Barcelona made the game safe with seven minutes left to play, as Messi exchanged passes with Cesc Fabregas, before calmly chipping the ball over Abbiati.
