Goals from Bruno Alves and Hugo Almeida give Portugal a 2-0 win over Azerbaijan in the World Cup qualifiers.

Portugal have moved up to second in group F following their 2-0 World Cup qualifier win over 10-man Azerbaijan this evening.

The visitors made a strong start to the match, with Danny and Joao Moutinho both having chances inside the opening 15 minutes.

Portugal continued to threaten the hosts' goal throughout the opening period, but they were unable to get the better of keeper Kamran Arhayev.

The home side found themselves reduced to 10 men early in the second half, as Rauf Aliyev picked up two yellow cards in the space of four minutes.

Portugal finally broke the deadlock after just over an hour of play, Bruno Alves heading the ball in from a Moutinho cross.

Hugo Almeida doubled their advantage with a little over 10 minutes before full time, heading the ball in from close range.

The result leaves Portugal just one point behind Russia.
