Former Liverpool and Chelsea striker Fernando Torres announces that he will join J League outfit Sagan Tosu this summer.

Fernando Torres has confirmed that he will join Japanese outfit Sagan Tosu following his exit from Atletico Madrid.

Torres left his boyhood club for a second time at the end of the season and has now decided to leave Europe for the first time with a venture to the J League.

The 34-year-old will now link up with Sagan Tosu - a club formed just 21 years ago who have spent the past six seasons in the top flight following their promotion in 2011.

Sagan Tosu's highest ever league finish was fifth place in 2012 and 2014, while last season they finished eighth in the league and once again missed out on a first trophy in the club's history.

Torres, meanwhile, has won almost every major honour in the game, including the World Cup, European Championships twice, Champions League and two Europa Leagues.

"We have had offers from every continent. My new team will be Sagan Tosu of Japan," Torres said at an event held at the gym he owns in Madrid on Tuesday.

"I have had offers from France, Germany and even one from Spain but at no point did I ever think about going to another European team. I wanted a new challenge in a completely different place."

The former Liverpool and Chelsea striker has scored 256 goals in 728 games during his career, more than 400 of which came with Atletico.
