Paul Lambert says that the return of goalkeeper Brad Guzan at Aston Villa will challenge Shay Given's spot as number one.

Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert has insisted that Shay Given will have to fight for his place as the club's number one goalkeeper.

The Midlands outfit are expected to re-sign shot-stopper Brad Guzan after letting go of the keeper at the end of the season after failing to negotiate a new deal.

"[The deal for Guzan is] near," said Lambert. "I know he has always had that stigma of being the number two behind some really good goalkeepers. But when you come back at the start of the season nobody knows what's going to happen and it depends on whoever does well."

Guzan spent four years at Villa Park before being released from the club.
