Shay Given: 'Roy Keane made a difference'

Aston Villa and Republic of Ireland goalkeeper Shay Given admits that Roy Keane's time at the club helped him prolong his international career.

Shay Given has admitted that Roy Keane "made a difference" when he decided to prolong his international career during the former Manchester United man's time as an assistant coach at Aston Villa.

The Republic of Ireland assistant spent time on Paul Lambert's coaching staff in 2014, but quit the role to focus on his role with Martin O'Neill's side.

The goalkeeper, who came off the bench during the goalless draw with England yesterday, told the Daily Mail: "I thought my international days had gone. But maybe a year down the road from making that decision to retire, I realised it was too early. I think Roy being at Villa, watching me in training, made a difference. He spoke to me a couple of times about it and he had Martin O'Neill's ear, too.

"I got back in and it was fantastic to get the nod for our last qualifier against Poland. With the league and the FA Cup, it's been pretty hectic on the club front, too, maybe as busy a period as I've had in my career. It's been great to have that opportunity."

Ireland face Scotland in a Euro 2016 qualifier on Saturday.
