Wantaway Arsenal defender Ainsley Maitland-Niles is reportedly set to stay at the club after holding talks with manager Mikel Arteta.

Arsenal defender Ainsley Maitland-Niles will reportedly be staying at the club after holding clear-the-air talks with manager Mikel Arteta.

The Englishman has struggled to get a look-in under the Arsenal boss this term and recently pleaded with the club to sanction his departure on social media amid links with Everton.

Maitland-Niles's Instagram post supposedly saw him banished from first-team training before speaking with Arteta, who is believed to have informed him that his proposed move to Everton would not be given the green light.

Now, The Mirror's chief football writer John Cross claims that Maitland-Niles will not leave Arsenal before Tuesday's 11pm deadline and will be given opportunities under Arteta this season.

The 24-year-old is expected to be handed chances at right-back as Hector Bellerin closes in on a loan move to Real Betis, but Arsenal are understood to have agreed a £16m deal for versatile Bologna defender Takehiro Tomiyasu.

Maitland-Niles has made one substitute appearance in the 2021-22 Premier League season so far and remains contracted to the Gunners until the summer of 2023.
