Joachim Low questions 'revenge' motivation for Algeria against Germany

Germany boss Joachim Low questions whether Algeria will be motivated to avenge his side for the infamous Disgrace of Gijon controversy at the 1982 World Cup in Spain.

Germany manager Joachim Low has questioned the idea that Algeria will be seeking revenge against his side for the infamous Disgrace of Gijon controversy.

The legendary game at the 1982 FIFA World Cup in Spain saw Germany defeat Austria with an early goal, a result which saw Algeria eliminated from the tournament.

However the German coach has insisted that Algeria should not be looking to punish his players.

"Why should they be seeking to punish this generation of Germany players? I am irritated by the use of word 'revenge,"' Low told reporters.

"But maybe this will work as motivation for Algeria."

Germany meet Algeria in the last 16 on Monday night at the Estadio Beira-Rio in Porto Alegre.
