Cesare Prandelli says that AC Milan striker Mario Balotelli showed maturity amid alleged racist chanting from Roma fans during their meeting on Sunday.

Italy manager Cesare Prandelli has paid tribute to AC Milan striker Mario Balotelli for the way he reacted to alleged racist chanting from Roma fans during their meeting on Sunday.

The former Manchester City forward raised his finger to his lips early in the second half while the game was suspended for two minutes in order to try to silence the away fans at the San Siro.

National team coach Prandelli believes that Balotelli showed maturity against Roma, who have since been fined £42,000 by Lega Calcio amid the allegations, during his attempts to diffuse the situation.

"Yesterday a clear signal was given," Prandelli told Tuttosport. "I think that in the face of upcoming episodes there will be temporary suspension and the interruption of the competition. It is not Balotelli's problem, but on the credibility of our football.

"We must not just get angry, but there are suitable ways of going to the stadium. A stadium made in a certain way helps a lot, like that of Juventus.

"If the fan feels at home, they think twice before doing horrible things. We are all responsible. Even the fans should get angry in front of the offensive chants."

The game finished as a goalless draw.
