Morgan Lake wins silver in Commonwealth Games high jump

England's Morgan Lake wins high jump silver on the Gold Coast as Saint Lucia's Levern Spencer wins her country's first ever Commonwealth Games gold medal.

Team England's Morgan Lake has won the silver medal in a historic women's high jump final at the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

The 20-year-old - a former heptathlete who has since decided to focus on the high jump - produced a best jump of 1.93m, but failed with attempts at 1.95m and 1.97m - the latter of which would have broken the Games record.

Instead the victory went to Levern Spencer, who becomes Saint Lucia's first ever gold medal-winner at the Commonwealth Games, picking up just their fourth medal overall in the history of the competition.

Spencer succeeded with her first attempt at 1.95m - just one centimetre below the Games record - and while she failed with subsequent tries at 1.97m and 2.00m, her earlier effort proved to be enough for the historic gold.

Australia's Nicola McDermott won bronze in front of a home crowd, with Canada's Alyxandria Treasure narrowly missing out by virtue of taking two attempts to clear 1.91m, whereas McDermott needed only one.

England's Bethan Partridge also competed in the final, with her best jump of 1.84m earning eighth place.
