Charles Woodson giving retirement "serious consideration"

Oakland Raiders safety Charles Woodson says that he will seriously consider retiring if he cannot secure the right salary in a new contract.

Charles Woodson has admitted that he will give retirement "serious consideration" if he cannot agree a well-paid contract with an NFL team for the 2014 season.

The Oakland Raiders safety, who will turn 38 early in the 2014 campaign, is due to become a free agent next month.

Woodson told NFL Radio: "If the right numbers don't come across for myself and from the team standpoint, it's a serious consideration, at this point, that I could've played my last season in the NFL.

"That's something that I think about. I do plan on playing another year. Hopefully something can get done with the Raiders and, if not, I would have to take a hard look at last year being the last one.

"When you get past a certain age, it's no longer about what you do on the field. It's about your age. They look at the age first and then what you do on the field second. There's no rush for any team to sign a veteran player. It's not just a Raiders situation. It's a league-wide deal."

Woodson made 97 tackles, two sacks, three forced fumbles and an interception during the 2013 season.
